The general properties of the alkaline earth metals in the modern periodic table

Alkaline earth metals
Alkaline earth metals in the modern periodic table .

It is very important to know that the alkaline earth metals are located on the left side of the periodic table , They are the second group of s-block after group ( 1 A ) .

You should know that they are divalent elements , as they have two electrons in their outermost energy levels .

It is very important to know that the alkaline earth metals are good conductors of the heat and the electricity .

You should know that they tend to lose their valency ( outermost ) electrons during the chemical reactions forming positive ions , each of them carries two positive charges .

It is very important to know that their densities are higher than the alkali metals densities . All alkaline earth metals sink in the water as they have higher densities than the water density .

You should know that the chemical activity of these elements is less than the alkali metals activity . Therefore they are not kept under the surface of kerosene or paraffin oil .

It is very important to know that their chemical activity increases as their atomic size increases as the lose of the two valency electrons becomes easier . Therefore Barium ( Ba ) is more active than calcium ( Ca ) which is more active than magnesium ( Mg ) .
